Educational Philosophy
At School for Little Children, we believe child-initiated play lays a foundation for learning and academic success. Through purposeful play, young children learn to interact with others, develop language skills, recognize and solve problems, and develop one’s own personality and sense of self.
Educate.
Classroom design promotes growth through play areas such as language and literacy, science and math, writing and art, blocks, games, and puzzles. Daily visits to the park, a full size gym, or playful bike room allow for running, climbing and riding. The curriculum we use to help plan educational activities and monitor developmental progress is called The Creative Curriculum. Children are taught new skills on a continuum, meaning each newly acquired skill is built upon what children have already learned.
Nurture.
The teaching staff builds trusting relationships with children and their families. Teachers use praise and encouragement as motivation for growth, learning, and self-control. They facilitate problem solving and conflict resolution. Patience, affection, supportive language, energy and creativity are the tools teachers use to provide a loving and caring setting where individuality is respected. Socialization, fostering friendships, and the development of a confident sense of self are of primary importance.
Inspire.
Learning new skills, taking pride in accomplishments and daily discovery are essential to a child's personal growth. At SLC, we welcome and celebrate all forms of diversity, including diversity of race, culture, language, religion and ability. Culturally relevant concepts are incorporated into our curriculum and included through books, stories, dramatic play, music, the arts, and family involvement.
